After some head scratching I noticed the block is resting on the oil pan and because of the weight of the block the oil pan is pushed in. Not much, just a few millimetres but apparently that&#8217;s enough for something to grind against it. When I lifted the engine not using the oil pan as a jack point the engine went round very smooth, so that&#8217;s a relief. I continued disassembling everything to prepare it for cleaning and painting. I&#8217;m not going to pull the head off so I&#8217;m just removing components like mounting brackets, wiring loom and plumbing to be able to paint the block.
